Let Us All Make Music

The Olympic Girls’ Choir and the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra join forces for the first time in presenting this performance, which will feature a work written especially for them by Artistic Director of the Bainbridge Chorale, Michael Miller.
The concert will be co-directed by Tigran Arakelyan, Director of the youth orchestra, and Laura Milleson, Director of the girls choir, who are both looking forward to this opportunity for their ensembles to perform together.

About this event,Tigran says:

“I am very excited for the collaboration with the Olympic Girls’ Choir. I am a big proponent of collaborations between arts organizations and truly believe that the future of arts in the 21st century is in our unified collaborative projects.
This collaboration is special because there aren’t too many piece written for string orchestra and choir, especially for our youth. This is a joint commission composed by accomplished musician Michael Miller who wrote this piece with our groups in mind. Lastly and most importantly, this creates an opportunity for our youth to learn and grow through this experience.”

Laura adds:

“I believe that excellence in music comes by helping others find joy in the entire process. In Let Us All Make Music, the choir proclaims “For we know the power of music. We can change the world one note at a time – whether played on our instruments or sung in clever rhyme.” We believe that this experience of making music together will create an opportunity for our youth to learn and grow. We look forward to sharing the results of their collaboration with the community.”

The Olympic Girls’ Choir: sharing a passion for singing

Olympic Girls' Choir

In September 2017 the Olympic Girls’ Choir entered its fourth year under the baton of Artistic Director Laura Milleson. Serving girls ages 7 to 14 residing on Bainbridge Island and in the Kitsap area, the girls’ choir provides a transformative experience through high-quality, diverse choral music education which emphasizes teamwork, encourages self-discipline, and fosters a deep commitment to artistic excellence. Along with music theory, sight reading, vocal technique and ensemble singing, the girls learn to be musicians in the context of a choir community. Repertoire is varied, ranging from traditional choral literature to current favorites, with each session culminating in a concert. As well, singers perform in the adult Chorale holiday concerts.

The choir is comprised of two ensembles, Encora (non-auditioned, Meet-the-Director appointment required), for girls in Grades 2 – 4, and Cantabile (auditioned) for girls in Grades 5 – 8.

Auditions and Meet-the-Director appointments for the Spring 2018 session are now closed.

The 2017-2018 Season

Thanks to all who attended our holiday concert shows, and special thanks to those intrepid audience members who sat in the dark at the Saturday evening performance during the power outage. We are grateful that you stayed to listen to us sing by the light of our cellphones!

Journey with the Chorale from Darkness to Light on April 21 & 22, a program reflecting the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth as winter ends, followed by spring’s renewal of light and life. We excited to announce that the featured work will be the West coast premiere of Jazz Mass, composed by James Kevin Gray and Rick Bean. Here’s what Gray has to say about the work:

“Jazz Mass  is a collaborative project Rick Bean and I composed beginning in 2015 for the sole purpose of bringing classical choral and working jazz musicians together. Often when a choral group sings jazz, it’s performed with the group’s regular accompanist and a soloist from within the group. This work asks choirs to invite community jazz artists into a partnership of equals.”

For this performance the Chorale will collaborate with iconic Seattle jazz vocalist, Greta Matassa, one of the most talented singers working in jazz today.  Voted “Northwest Vocalist of the Year” by Earshot Jazz seven times in 15 years, she was honored with a lifetime achievement award and inducted into the Earshot Jazz Hall of Fame in 2014. Rick Bean, the co-composer and jazz pianist  will share his extraordinary talent with us for these performances as well.
