Holiday Favorites from the Bainbridge Chorale

The 2019-2020 season marks our tenth year under the baton of Artistic Director Michael Austin Miller. To celebrate his tenure, Maestro Miller has gathered a collection of audience and singer favorites from previous holiday seasons along with one or two new pieces that are sure to become favorites in the years ahead.

Highlights of the program are two interpretations of the tender text from the Matins of Christmas, O magnum mysterium, describing the wonder that the animals should see the newborn Lord lying in their manger.

The earlier version, by 16th century composer Tomás Luis de Victoria and here arranged for women’s voices by Maestro Miller, is an example of late Renaissance sacred music. The later version of the same text is a setting by perhaps the most-performed contemporary composer of choral music, Pacific Northwest native Morten Lauridsen. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Mr. Lauridsen has recently returned to spend his retirement where much of his composing was done, on an island in the San Juans.

The Chorale will also sing a selection of pieces by John Rutter, Eric Whitacre, Franz Biebl and others, ranging from gently meditative to cheerfully festive.  And, in case you’d like to raise your own voice in song as well, there will be opportunities for the audience to join the Chorale is singing some familiar carols.

In addition to our full-length concerts, we present a one-hour long concert on Saturday afternoon, December 14, suitable for families, children, or anyone who prefers a shorter concert.
